"I thought it might be an
opportunity. We didn't think Vandenberg was vulnerable to
closure action," explained
David Richardson, an
Orcutt resident, retired Air Force colonel and member of the
newly formed Friends of Vandenberg.
"But there's opportunity
if the military consolidates activities at other bases, and
go to much larger bases to reduce infrastructure. It would
be an opportunity for Vandenberg to try and attract some of
those activities." |

VAFB would gain jobs under plan

A proposal to close Onizuka Air Force
Station in Sunnyvale would bring dozens of jobs to the
Central Coast under the Defense Department's plan to
reshape its bases.
Vandenberg Air Force Base would gain some 145 new jobs
under the proposed Base Realignment and Closure list
released early Friday morning by U.S. Defense Secretary
Donald Rumsfeld.

The 30th Space Wing at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., is the Air
Force Space Command organization responsible for all Department of
Defense
space and missile launch activities on the West Coast. All U.S.
satellites destined for near polar orbit are launched from Vandenberg.
Major

Training teams honored
Two Air Education and Training Command teams received awards
recently at the 2003 Air Force Association convention in Washington,
D.C.
A joint team from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., and Keesler
Air Force Base, Mo., won the Air Force Chief of Staff Team
Excellence Award
Space Command

Space Command announced the winners of the 2003 Air
Force Association Aerospace Awards.
The Theodore Von Karman Award for
the most outstanding contribution to national
defense in the field of science and engineering
related to aerospace activity was awarded to the
Test Engineering Division, Operating Location Alpha,
595th Space Group, Vandenberg Air Force Base,
Calif.
